Antarctica Speakers

When we were talking about Antarctica we had Eleanors uncle and aunt come and tell us what they did in Antarctica when they went, and they show the gear that you should wear when you are there, and some people got to try some on.

River Visit

On the day which was a few weeks ago Room 17 went to the Tukituki river to do some activities and experiments, and we got to go in the water as you can see.

Maths Term 4

For maths in my maths group we had to make a one metre cube, and we had to see how many people could fit in it, which was about 10 people. So it was awkward!

Life Ed

For the last couple of weeks Room 17 got to visit the harold truck for Life Ed, We talked about drugs and our personalities. We also see harold which was a lot of fun, and I liked it when the room kept changing colours. Plus when harold sang it was really funny!

Beach Ed

On Wednesday the 7th of November Room 17 and 13 did our trip for Beach Ed, we met some lifeguards and they taught us life safety rules about being on the beach. Plus I got to write on the white board!

The Big Earthquake

It was a cold and whimpering night,

As unexpected, a rumbling sound was exposed,

Like the ground was about to blow.

Like something got out of control,

Like moving waves bouncing in the night,

A trembling shock was revealed.

Threatened, Terrified, Destroyed, Broken,

This was a huge disaster,

No one was safe.

Came to a complete stop,

But felt all over the country,

It was horrible.

Earthquake and Tsunami In Japan

On 11 March, 2011, a megathrust earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, that have been killing over 15,000 people and causing one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. It was centred on the seafloor at a depth of 24 km, this was the fourth largest earthquake on record and the largest to ever hit Japan.

The energy released by the earthquake produced a huge tsunami, with waves up to 30ft beginning to hit the coast within about an hour. The tsunami was the cause of the loss of life that resulted from the disaster, entire towns were destroyed.

In the following year Japan was hit by over 5,000 aftershocks, the earthquake was so powerful it shifted Earth on its axis of rotation. The cost of the earthquake and tsunami is still ongoing to some extent.

It is believed to have been the most expensive disaster in history, so far amounting to an estimated $300bn. Further to this, 45,700 buildings and 230,000 vehicles were destroyed.

There has been a very big earthquake that happened in Culverden and it stranded two cows and a calf. They were rescued earlier today after catching the world's attention when their plight was captured on camera.

Endangered because people think they’re dangerous,

Fearless because people aren’t afraid of getting attacked,

These are words that grizzlies are like,

When humans hurt them very badly.

MasterChef Last Year

MasterChef Last Year   By Nicole Thomson

In 2015 which was last year we did Masterchef for Food Tech, to do it we had to get into pairs but I didn’t have one so I got put into a three. At first I thought it was ok but they didn’t include me and the were being very selfish, so I decided to go all on my own. For the Masterchef challenge we had to make a dozen double chocolate muffins, it sounded really yummy and really exciting and I couldn’t wait to get started.

Then as the time went we all started baking, I could feel the pressure come off me as I start making the batter. I tried to follow the ingredients carefully, and I tried not to mess up. Once all the ingredients were in I started mixing it together, I took my time to get it right and I concentrated really hard. Then when it was all done I managed put the batter into the cupcake tins, and I had so much that I was able to put it into another dozen.

When they were complete I put them both in the oven for a few minutes, then I waited and waited and waited as I was waiting. I kept checking on it every few seconds, now it was finally finished and I waited for them to cool down, then we had to choose one for the judges to look at. The after a couple of weeks I found out the results and I came 2nd place and when I found out I was to happy, my mum was really proud of me, and my dad were really proud of me for trying my best, and I had lots of fun doing it.

Trip To The Tukituki River

On the 7th of November We went to the Tukituki River to do activities for some science experiment on water. We were there all afternoon from 1-3pm. We did five activities that were called pipette, clarity tube, conductivity, temperature and PH level which were very fun to do.

Media Studies for Peak T.V

On the first two weeks of term four, 17a and 17b created a live broadcast for Peak T.V in Media Studies with Mr Cottrell. Media Studies is one of the Tech's that we did just for the start of the term. In our group Alannah and I were chosen to be the hosts to help introduce the audience to what was happening on Peak T.V, she was Host 1 and I was Host 2. Each of us got a part to do to help, and each tech group got to watch each other perform in the Peak T.V studio. It was awesome!

Uncle Tu Poem: Stephanie

Stephanie

She is an annoying little sister who love to sing, she is mean irritating and disturbing. She is a cranky person most of the time.

She is like that

She is a very noisy who really loves cats, so we call her a cat person/cat lover there’s no doubt about that. She is loveable when she is in her happy place.

She is like that.

When I look at her I see a weird cheeky look in her eyes like she is going to startle me, but she hits, bites, kicks, punches, and licks me all the time.

She is like that.

Sometimes she is delightful, hilarious and is a lovely person when she feels like it. She is with me all the time so to me she is like a little gnome creeping all over me.

1.  The main idea of the journey for Mac was: To raise enough money to help st john cadets to buy more ambulances.

2.   What were some of the problems that Mac faced? The bad weather and The long trip.

     How did he create his solutions? By just keep pedaling.

His dad didn’t want to go on this trip so Mac convinced him to just keep pedaling.

This is Emily Brown's and my ChangeMaker Speech that we did for inquiry.

Wasting Food

Nicole: Food wastage, is it really that bad? and How does it affect US?

Em: Hi, I'm Em

Nicole: And I’m Nicole

Em: Did you know that oceania and north america are responsible for the largest amount of food waste in the WORLD... THATS US were talking about!

Nicole: Did you also know that wasting 1 gallon of milk is like wasting 1000 gallons of water… WELL IT’S TRUE!, Why? Because each gallon of milk needs that much water to be produced!

Em: Instead of blaming food wastage on America, we could make a difference. Instead we waste enough food to feed entire countries because we just don’t care and we don't really think about it because it's “ not our problem”

Nicole: Wasting food is really bad because you end up wasting your money on things you buy from the supermarket, and you're not being nice to the people who make the food there.

Em: Come on HNI, let's talk rubbish! Here's a tip, you know when you're eating a sandwich and the bell rings so all your friends stand up to leave, so you end up throwing out half your food because you don’t have the time to eat it? How about next time you cut your food into halves and quarters, so you can eat it later for afternoon tea! If you know you won’t eat all of it, just eat something else!

Nicole: Did you also know that 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year.

Em: Ok. Enough with the facts already! Let's do something!

COMPOST!

Nicole: WORM FARMS!

Em: I know what you're thinking,” Eww, whats it a plastic box of squiggly little worms gonna do?”

Nicole: Well… when you put your scraps of food into a box the worms EAT IT!

Em: The upside to this is that it speeds up the process of making soil!

Ok. NOW you're thinking “why do we need a mound of DIRT in our school?” I’ll tell you why... we can make soil in the winter, then have a veggie garden ready for the summer! Which is great, because that will REALLY save money.

Nicole: Unfortunately, this is not something that Em and I can do on our own.

Em: We need YOUR help. But trust me, it's SIMPLE. All you have to do is just THINK about it. How often do you take one bite out of something then throw it out? All the time? Yep, I read your mind yet again.

Nicole: I bet everyone's wondering what we want to do….

Em: Wow, now you just read MY mind! Let's simplify it: Number one: chuck out as little food as possible otherwise it will go into a landfill, destroys the earth and everyone will starve!

Nicole: Wow!

Em: Number two: As a school project we can make worm farm/veggie garden!

Nicole: OH Cool! School pets! What are we gonna name them?

Em: I don’t know Jeff?

Nicole: Fred, Frank, Francis?

Em: TOULOUSE!

Nicole: No JERRY!

( look at each other as if making an agreement.)

Em: Let's make a change!

Nicole: We can do anything!
